Middle school students who earn more arts credits are more likely to have higher academic achievement, meeting the state passing standard by more than 17 percentage points across all subjects except Algebra 1.
Students in districts that met the state accountability standard earned 20% more fine arts credits. High school students who earn more arts credits are more likely to have higher academic achievement, meeting the commended standard by more than 15 percentage points across all subjects.
Districts meeting the state accountability standard had students earning 20% more fine arts credits than districts that needed improvement. Middle school students that earned more arts credits are more likely to have higher academic achievement, meeting the state passing standard by greater than 17 percentage points across all subjects except Algebra 1.

The Texas Education Agency maintains a list of approved arts courses that meet specific curriculum standards in each subject area. For example, if a schools offers Algebra I and Algebra II, each course is considered “unique” because of differing curriculum. However, if a school offers multiple sections of an Algebra I class, then that would only count as one unique course. State-approved innovative courses were not included in this study.
